Australian female scientists embrace the Wikibomb

15 August

More than a hundred people from across Australia created and improved the Wikipedia pages of Australian female scientists, as part of National Science Week.

The Australian Academy of Science held a Women of Science Wikibomb on Thursday, 14 August 2014 to address the fact that many accomplished women scientists have little or no presence on the world’s most popular online encyclopaedia.

Registered Wikibombers edited online and at a main event at the Shine Dome in Canberra from 10am. Satellite events were also held in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

Eminent scientists including the Vice President and CEO of the UK Royal Society, the Academy’s current and immediate past presidents, including veski innovation fellow Professor Andrew Holmes AM, and Nancy Millis Award Winner Emma Johnston dropped in to the Shine Dome throughout the day.

The Wikibomb preceded the ACT launch of National Science Week, which was held at the Shine Dome on the Thursday evening.

More than a hundred pages were created yesterday, a full list can be found here.
