Dr Jean Venables CBE

Jean Venables is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Chartered Civil Engineer and member of the Chartered Institution  of Water and Environmental Management, with an MSc in Public  Health Engineering, and a long involvement in flood risk management, water and wastewater engineering, waste management, and water resources issues.

She is a consultant in flood risk management and water level management; a Director of Venables Consultancy and Chairman of Crane Environmental.

She is an elected member of the RNLI Council and a member of their Technical Committee. She is active on RAcad Eng and ICE committees. She is Chair of the Engineering and Environment Committee of WFEO, the World Federation of Engineering  Organisations. She is also a Council member of IESF and was  President in 2018.

Recently she was Chief Executive (is now a Vice President) of the Association of Drainage Authorities; Chairman of the Customer Challenge Group for Sutton and East Surrey Water Company, a  Non-Executive Director of HR Wallingford, Chairman of the Nuclear Liabilities Fund and Chair of Constructionarium.

Jean was President of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 2008-9.  She was awarded a CBE in the 2010 Birthday Honours List for  services to the civil engineering profession, an OBE in the 2004  New Year Honours List for services to flood defence and an MBE in the 1997 New Year Honours list for services to civil engineering.  She was also honoured by the Institution of Civil Engineers with the award of the Garth Watson Medal in 2001 and has been elected to  the Smeatonians. The Jean Venables Medal is awarded to the person with the highest performance at their ICE Professional Technician Review.
