Melbourne best city three years in a row

For the third consecutive year Melbourne has been ranked the best city in the world to live, according to the latest Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) 2013 Global Liveability Survey.

It's no surprise to veski, and the growing number of leading scientists and researchers who have moved to the Victorian capital as veski innovation fellows, that the city has kept the top spot since taking the title from Vancouver after a run of almost a decade.

Not only is Melbourne the world's best city to live it also has growing science and innovation communities with a number of high profile research precincts and significant infrastructure to support groundbreaking research.

Australian cities dominated the rankings claiming four of the top ten spots, with Adelaide coming in equal fifth and Sydney and Perth falling one place in the rankings to seventh and ninth position respectively. Vienna once again came in second place with Vancouver (3), Toronto (4), Calgary (=5), Helsinki (8) and Auckland (10) rounding out the top ten.

The EIU’s Liveability Ranking, part of the Worldwide Cost of Living Survey, assesses living conditions in 140 cities around the world by assigning a rating across five broad categories of stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

Melbourne scores highly in all of the EIU’s criteria and achieves perfect scores in the areas of healthcare, education and infrastructure. Ongoing investment in Melbourne’s world-class infrastructure was highlighted in the report for keeping Melbourne at the top of the index.

The news comes just weeks after the Monocle named Melbourne’s quality of life the second best in the world commenting that “The intelligent charm of Melbourne is being matched by clever city-wide ideas” as it commends the significant investment in infrastructure and cycle-ways.
