New inspiring students (and teachers) program

23 April

As part of veski's inspiring students (and teachers) program, we have welcomed students and staff from three regional Victorian schools to the veski community.

veski's new inspiring students (and teachers) program has been developed to lift the participation rates in the sciences among students at Neerim District, Mooroopna and Kyneton secondary colleges.

With additional funding from the Victorian Government, veski will deliver a new program of activities and resources to inspire teachers and students including opportunities to meet our fellows and experience science in the real world.

Since 2004, veski has inspired the next generation of scientists and researchers through its programs and activities. This new program is a continuation of this work and will involve members of the veski family and other stakeholders.

Our inspiring students (and teachers) program, will provide support to the science teachers over the next three years and introduce their students to a range of unique experiences. Our innovation fellows will also work with the students and teachers to encourage more students to continue science through school and into university.

As the first activity, veski hosted science teachers from the three secondary colleges at an initial briefing on the program with veski staff and representatives of the Department of Business and Innovation and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

Since that meeting, veski has visited each of the schools and met with the science teachers. We also toured their science facilities, which will get a much needed upgrade in coming months thanks to funding from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

"I am pleased to report that everyone is excited and ready to embrace the new program. We left after each visit with new ideas for tailoring the program to their needs," veski chief executive office Ms Julia L Page said.

As one of the first activities, veski innovation fellows and board members will host students and their teachers at the Graeme Clark Oration and Dinner on Monday, 29 April 2013. The students will hear from Geoffrey Lamb about Global Health, Economic Growth and the End of Absolute Poverty.
