Embracing conflict and difficult conversations

On Thursday, 24 October, veski partnered with event host Michael Page to provide Leading the Way participants with their fifth session of the 2019 STEM sidebyside program, Embracing conflict and difficult conversations, at Engineers Australia.

The day commenced with a workshop provided by executive coach, Sue Rosen.  Sue discussed the reasons we avoid conflict and why it is important to embrace it and how we can embrace it constructively. 

Sue focused on how to have conversations that matter and how to resolve issues without the conversation escalating into an argument.  This was especially important when stepping up into leadership.  To feel valued and committed in your role, in either a professional or personal context, it is essential to put forward your reasoned opinion, whether or not you get the resolution or outcome you wanted.  Once you had made the decision to have the difficult conversation, the next step was to fully prepare what you would say, and to develop a 40 second statement to open the conversation.

 

It takes courage to undertake challenging conversations and you have to be prepared to put yourself in a position of vulnerability, but that this vulnerability can improve connectedness and ongoing relationships. Sue talked about the importance of mindfulness, and used breathing techniques with the group which they can utilise to keep themselves grounded before undertaking a difficult conversation.  

Following the workshop, the Leading the Way cohort joined with Michael Page industry representatives for a panel discussion on Embracing conflict & difficult conversations, with Ms Natalie Waldie, BAE Systems, Mr Adam Williams, Maurice Blackburn Lawyers and Dr Manjari Mehta, Consus Global, facilitated by Ms Sue Rosen.  The event concluded with a networking session.

The inspiring women STEM sidebyside program is an initiative to support women in the STEM industries that is led by veski and Monash University with the support of the British Consulate General Melbourne. This dynamic program is designed to empower women at different career stages with the skills, networks and mindset to develop and achieve their career goals within STEM industries.
