Wednesday 11 February 2015 marked an historic day for inspiring women in Australia, and inspiring women in science, with two high level positions being succeeded by Victorian women.

Ms Linda Dessau, the AFL’s second female commissioner, was named the first female Governor of Victoria, and distinguished medical researcher, Professor Anne Kelso AO, was appointed the new Chief Executive Officer of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

Ms Dessau, who will assume the position as the 29th Governor of Victoria on 1 July 2015, was a judge of the Family Court from 1995 to 2013, after serving as a magistrate in the Children’s Court and the Melbourne Magistrates Court. She has served as an AFL Commissioner since 2008, and was inaugural chair of the Essendon Football Club Women’s Network. Ms Dessau says she will continue to push for more women on boards and in senior positions as Governor of Victoria.

Professor Kelso, who assumes the top role at the NHMRC, obtained a Bachelor of Science (Honours) and PhD from the University of Melbourne and has developed significant global health experience and networks through her work with the World Health Organisation (WHO). Her research in immunology and disease control at the University of Melbourne is a testament to the potential of a collaborative research environment.

“There’s no doubt that the appointment of Ms Dessau and Professor Kelso will provide considerable inspiration for women in a range of fields, including science, and veski congratulates both women on their significant achievements,” veski chief executive Ms Julia L Page said.

veski is supporting career progression of Victorian women through the inspiring women program which provides resources, information and opportunities in partnership with government, industry, community and academia, as well as professional development and networking opportunities.

The next veski inspiring women professional development & networking event will be held on Monday, 16 March and no doubt the success of these two inspirational women will be a topic of conversation.

Dessau and Kelso are women who have succeeded in their careers, both in sectors traditionally led by men. With their extensive work backgrounds, vision to the future, innovative ideas, these two women have a wealth of experience and knowledge to be shared with others both in their respective sectors and the broader community.
