All competitively selected participants will join Michelle Gallaher for a full day workshop on Becoming an Online Influencer. This session was proudly supported by venue partner National Australia Bank (NAB).

We live and work in a highly connected world. You Tube has become more influential than free-to-air television and Facebook has billions more users that online readers of all newspapers and magazines put together. A staggering 42% of the world’s population are active social media users.  As STEM professionals we need to have a deeper understanding of how to use new digital media to improve science and health literacy, offer compliance and engagement opportunities and promote the importance of the work we do to sustain or access funding, a social licence, attract commercial partners or maintain political support.  The Internet of Things has become central in our professional and private lives – from Google search, wearables, apps, and email through to Facebook.  Yet many of us struggle to understand how to develop a professional brand strategy and execute it in the digital marketplace.

This workshop will provide insight into how you can define, articulate and execute your personal and professional strategy for social media, select the best platform for you, understand how to better use the tools each platform offers and knowing how to create original content and how to promote it on social media.  We will also look at some of the unique ways that STEM professionals can use social media tools for market research, social listening, engagement, sentiment analysis and networking with peers.

Workshop content includes:

  • Developing your personal social media strategy

  • Deciding which social media platform is best for your professional needs

  • Working out what to say, share, like and post on social media

  • Key tips and tricks about social media etiquette, how to use the tools, read the statistics and gain (the right) followers

  • How to manage your time so you can use social media effectively

  • How to measure impact and value on social media
