veski inspiring women STEM sidebyside participants from the Leading the Way stream will join Sue Rosen for a workshop on ‘Embracing Conflict and Difficult Conversations’ followed by a Panel session with industry leaders and an opportunity to network with key members across academia, government and business.

This session was proudly supported by event partner and host Michael Page.

Life is full of conversations we don’t want to have, both at work or at home: your mother-in-law is coming to stay and you don’t like how she looks after your kids; your colleague is taking lots of time off work and expects you to pick up the extra work; you are feeling excluded from the “boys club” which is making decisions at the pub after work, your boss has passed you over for promotion. Every day we have to make decisions about whether to have the conversation or whether to avoid it. We worry that if we avoid the conversation we will become resentful but that if we have the conversation the conflict might escalate.

Changing how you deal with difficult conversations is challenging, it takes practice and breaking out of your comfort zone is rarely easy but the potential rewards are rich, and can transform our relationships.

During this workshop you will:

  • - Explore why we avoid conflict
  • - Discover why is it so important to learn how to embrace conflict
  • - Learn how can we embrace conflict constructively
  • - Experience preparing for a difficult conversation
  • - Walk away with a template for future conversations
