Minister Carr announes ARC Future Fellowships

Media Release from Senator the Hon Kim Carr

200 BRIGHT FUTURES

Two hundred of the world’s brightest minds will help us better understand ourselves and the universe as part of the Gillard Labor Government’s push to attract the best researchers.

These men and women will help uncover a plethora of new knowledge, from the causes of back pain, to the effects of war and how our galaxies are formed.

Announcing 200 Australian Research Council Future Fellowships the Innovation Minister, Senator Kim Carr, said the funding reflected the Government’s commitment to ensuring a strong Australian research workforce.

“I created the Future Fellowships to address the lack of Australian opportunities available for our talented mid-career researchers,” Senator Carr said.

"The Government made sure that the scheme would bring to our shores the best minds from around the globe, strengthening our research capacity and ensuring that we have the skills we need as our academic workforce ages.

“In this group of 200 researchers, ten have returned to Australia and 22 are overseas citizens who we welcome to our shores. “I congratulate the Future Fellows and thank them for their contribution to our country.”

This 2010 cohort of Future Fellows were announced at the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra.

Highlighting research that supports our defence personnel, one UNSW Future Fellow will use visualisation technology to communicate and understand the war stories of our Defence men and women.

The Future Fellowships scheme was implemented in 2009 and is awarding up to 1000 fellowships over five years at a total value of $844 million. The first 200 recipients were announced in September 2009.
