Dr Rosen 9th International Connections Recipient

12 October

Dr Jonathan Rosen has spent most of his extensive professional career developing advanced medical technologies for cardiovascular, neurosurgical, and spinal surgery while working with corporations, start-ups, and teaching hospitals in the US and internationally - work that brought him into close contact with many scientists and engineers.

In September 2010 he was the guest presenter of the veski international connections program on the theme of commercialisation and management skills.

Dr Jonathan Rosen is a Special Assistant to the Provost's Office and Senior Research Fellow for Entrepreneurial Studies at Boston University, USA.

The veski international connections program helps bring world-renowned scientists and leading edge researchers to Victoria. By building global connections with these outstanding individuals, veski is able to facilitate world-class education and training for the Victorian community through the sharing of knowledge and experience at forums including seminars, symposiums and public lectures.

In 2007 Dr Rosen was asked to set up an Institute dedicated to entrepreneurial studies and technical development and commercialisation under the School of Management at Boston University.

Dr Rosen says the concept seemed like a strange journey given that he was not a professor of entrepreneurship. However, his entrepreneurial experience includes the founding of medical technology companies in the US and internationally. But, he says the transition to executive director of the Institute of Technology Entrepreneurship and Commercialisation (ITEC) in fact, was natural and indeed friendly.

The Institute has a dual charter with the School of Management to teach entrepreneurship to graduates and under-graduates as well as find ways to do projects with other campuses, alumni and to progress this internationally. Students of the School of Management study entrepreneurial skills as a ‘concentration’ – side by side with their traditional management training.

One of the main programs to be implemented at ITEC is the Soft Landings project that helps companies break into new markets internationally. Dr Rosen says this will be one of the key discussions for Australia especially with those in the medical technology space.

“The message for Australia, given its size is that any new companies that come out of this space have to be ‘born’ global to be successful”, he says.

In July 2010, Dr Rosen was asked to expand the entrepreneurship program beyond the School of Management and to make it available as a resource for the whole of the Boston University.

Dr Rosen says this required some careful crafting to teach this in other faculties. To make this work and to essentially evolve the project, Dr Rosen was invited to work directly with the University Provost.

Jonathan Rosen received his PhD in Biomaterials and Bioengineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and his MBA in Strategic Planning from Columbia University. He grew up in upstate New York and has been married to his wife, Nancy, a speech pathologist and teacher for 41 years.

They have criss-crossed the US following Dr Rosen’s profession over many years. In that time he served as Chief Technology Officer for the Codman & Surtleff Surgical Division of Johnson & Johnson.

Also as director of the CIMIT Office of Technology Implementation, where he helped establish collaborative research teams and support translational research programs in biomaterials, tissue engineering, optical diagnostics, orthopedics, trauma and critical care. He continues to serve as senior advisor to CIMIT, is the principal investigator for the CIMIT global health program, and is a founding board member of the Institute for Pediatric Innovation.

Dr Rosen and his wife settled in Boston 12 years ago. They have two adult daughters; Jennifer who lives in Chicago and who has two sons, and their youngest, Samantha, who is a graduate student studying education.
