NICTA to host Open Day for schools

10 August

On Monday 15 August, Victorian school students (and their teachers) can go behind the scenes at NICTA Victoria Research Laboratory to see how they are using their computing and engineering knowledge to address some of society’s pressing problems.

During National Science Week, NICTA’s Health Science Discovery Day will provide the community with a rare opportunity to see how research and innovation is helping to make Australia a healthier country, and how a multidisciplinary approach to research is providing new answers in dealing with some major health issues.

Researchers will be on hand to describe their research in non-technical language and to answer questions from the students.

The students will also get to tour NICTA’s Terabit Networking Laboratory where there will be demonstrations of some of their projects.

NICTA will be showcasing the following health research with a number of featured presentations on:

  • the advanced electronics behind the (Australian) bionic eye
  • a software tool that tracks cells in microscopic images to extract biologically relevant information, leading to improved drug design and development
  • a software tool that identifies primary cancer tumors using gene measurements, leading to successful treatment of cancer
  • a software tool that searches for combinations in DNA which are linked to disease, shortening the time taken to analyze data and leading to improved treatments
  • a software tool that assembles genomes after DNA has been sequenced, to assist in answering important biological questions.

Attendance at the Discovery Day is free of charge.
