Peter Doherty - Plagues, Pestilence & Influenza

4 February

On Monday, 6 November 2006, at the Wellcome Trust complex, Advance was delighted to host Dr Peter Doherty, Nobel Laureate and Australian of the Year (1997) as our inaugural speaker, marking the launch of the London chapter of Advance’s global Life Sciences network.

Dr Doherty has been very generous in his support of Advance and previously has presented in several US cities to appreciative audiences.

We were delighted that he made time in his busy European schedule to present ‘Plagues, Pestilence and Influenza’ to a substantial London audience of Advance members and friends who showed their appreciation of his presentation through a lively question and answer session and extended mingling over drinks after the presentation while Petersigned copies of his book A Beginner's Guide to Winning the Nobel Prize.

Advance was also pleased to host a further special guest and supporter of Advance, Dame Bridget Olgilvie, an Australian and one of the UK's leading medical scientists.

As a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Director of the Wellcome Trust at the time it was turning its attention to ""public engagement with science”, Dame Bridget’s commitment to fostering cooperation between science, industry and not-for-profit concerns is well-known. Members had a unique opportunity to discuss science issues with two of Australia’s highest achieving researchers, and feedback was positive.

Catherine McGovern, Chair of the London Chapter of the Life Sciences network, and her team welcomed many new members and garnered their thoughts on how the network should expand across the UK. The network is currently planning an exciting program of events for 2007 and welcomes the participation of life sciences members who would like to contribute.

Advance London would also like to thank the Wellcome Trust for their partnering and generous support for the event.
