Dr Donald Ingber delivers student presentation before 2014 OrationAs part of the inspiring students (& teachers) program, veski hosted 70 secondary school students and teachers from Mooroopna, Kyneton and Hume Central Secondary Colleges at three unique events with Dr Ingber: the inaugural students engagement presentation prior to the Oration, the Graeme Clark Oration, and the Oration Dinner.

Throughout the students engagement presentation, “Tales of Scientific Discovery from a Life without Borders”, Dr Ingber shared his personal story of becoming a scientist and the exciting discoveries he has been involved with, as well as how he came to be leading a major research institute delivering scientific breakthroughs that promise to impact the lives of millions of people.

In attendance were more than 110 secondary students and teachers from Victorian secondary colleges. Following the presentation students and teachers were given the opportunity to meet and have their photos taken with Dr Ingber before the Graeme Clark Oration.

At the Oration entitled “The Next Technology Wave: Biologically Inspired Engineering” Dr Ingber discussed some of the breakthrough research undertaken at the Wyss Institute that is poised to change the world.

Dr Ingber talked about a future where new cancer treatments become available in a few short years not decades, where animal testing is no longer necessary because organs and a whole body are tested on microchips, and where targeted tumour cells are individually destroyed without the need for surgery.

2013 Victoria Prize recipient Professor Lloyd Hollenberg with students at GCOMembers of the veski family and veski alliance hosted 16 secondary students and three teachers at the Oration Dinner, attended by leaders from the medical research, academic, business and government communities. The dinner gave the veski hosts the opportunity to engage directly and talk to the students about their areas of scientific research to help inspire the next generation of bright young scientists.

An insightful question and answer session was held with Dr Ingber at the dinner and guests including students were given the chance to pose questions they had about his presentation.
